Colchester United may have to play the patience game to gain some home comforts this season.
The U’s welcome Scunthorpe United tomorrow and are looking to improve their record of just two home wins since the start of the season.
A victory against the high-flying Iron could propel Colchester into the top half of Coca-Cola League One, but, while their away form has been good, some of their recent performances on home turf – including the 2-0 defeat by lowly Hereford United – suggest that may not be the case.
However, the players and coaching staff have been working hard to analyse why they are finding it so tough to secure points at home and David Perkins said a more cautious approach may be the key to success.
“We have addressed a few things and looked at the videos and hopefully we know what we are doing wrong and can put it right,” said the 26-year-old former Rochdale midfielder.
“We have to put it right and sooner or later it will come.
“It is not as if we are playing poorly, it is just that we have been conceding the first goal in games and teams do then sit in and we are struggling to break them down.
“Our home form has been down to a few things, but conceding the first goal gives visiting teams a lift and puts us on the back foot so I think that is the big reason.
“We have talked about playing like we do away from home, getting to 30 minutes at 0-0 and maybe to half-time, thinking the crowd are on our side and have a push in the second half.
“It is time to stand up and be counted.”
