Ipswich Town held their nerve to win a nerve-jangling penalty shoot-out in their Carling Cup first-round encounter at Shrewsbury.
Jon Walters, Connor Wickham, Alan Quinn and Ed Upson were the men on target as the shoot-out ended 4-2.
Jake Robinson saw his effort saved by Town goalkeeper Shane Supple while Graham Coughlan scooped his over the bar.
The sides had been locked at 3-3 after extra-time in a thrilling encounter at the Prostar Stadium.
Wickham had been the Ipswich star in the first 90 minutes.
The 16-year-old was a revelation, scoring twice to underline his growing reputation.
First, he gave his side the lead in the 11th minute.
Reggie Lambe found him after a short corner involving Owen Garvan and Quinn and the 16-year-old turned just inside the box and fired a low effort inside the left-hand post, past goalkeeper Chris Neal.
Town looked on top at that stage and deserved their lead but the battling hosts were soon level.
Kevin McIntyre whipped in a low cross from the left and somehow the ball evaded Town's entire back four and reached Robinson.
Unmarked, he kept his cool to hammer a convincing shot beyond Supple.
Shrewsbury were now in the ascendancy and grabbed a deserved second six minutes later.
Again, it was disappointing from a defensive point of view as Tommy Smith's weak clearance went straight to Dave Hibbert.
The experienced striker let fly with a brilliant, dipping 30-yard volley that flew over the despairing Supple.
Town were stunned into action and finished the first half strongly.
They got themselves back on level terms when Quinn burst forward, after a neat exchange of passes, before being fouled on the edge of the area by Coughlan.
Referee Mick Russell awarded a free-kick and Quinn, who felt he should of have a penalty, thrashed a low effort through a crowd of players past Neal.
That set the tempo for a dominant second-half performance and, after Quinn and Shane O'Connor went close, the spotlight once again fell on Wickham.
After being fed by Quinn, he twisted inside two defenders and produced a powerful shot beyond Neal.
Town looked to be cruising but the hosts were not finished and Shane Cansdell-Sherriff produced a late, right-footed goal to force extra-time.
