Richard Wright admitted having mixed feelings after Ipswich Town’s dismal defeat at West Bromwich Albion.
The Blues produced another sub-standard performance and were never in contention during Saturday’s 2-0 setback.
Wright’s performance was the main positive, though, and he produced a string of top-class saves – including one from a penalty – to keep his side in contention.
However, the former England man admitted his own display offered scant consolation as Town continued their dreadful start to the new Coca-Cola Championship season.
“It’s so frustrating,” he said.
“Of course, I want to do well personally and enjoyed the match but it has to be a team thing.
“I’ll take positives from it, like my own performance, but we were very disappointed to lose.
“We can’t keep giving teams a two-goal head start and it’s like we’re waiting for things to happen in games, rather than making them happen.
“We’re giving silly goals away but it’s early days and we know we can improve and progress.
“We just have to be patient and stay positive.”
Wright’s crowning moment was a second-half penalty save from the Baggies’ Luke Moore.
He blocked the effort with his leg and said: “To make any save is always great, but Alex Bruce cleared the rebound and you need people around to help you out.”
Meanwhile, Wright admitted being surprised by fellow Town goalkeeper Shane Supple’s decision to quit football, at the age of 22.
The Irishman has been released from his contract after ‘falling out of love with the game’.
He wants to pursue different challenges, thought to be with the police force.
“Shane’s decision came as a surprise,” said Wright.
“I was pretty close to him but never had any idea.
“It’s disappointing but we have to respect his decision.
“It would have been easy for him to sit there and continue picking up a good wage but he wants to do other things and I’m sure he’ll make a success of whatever he chooses.”
Town will look to get back on track when they head to Peterborough United tomorrow night for a second-round clash in the Carling Cup.
