Roy Keane is banking on a hectic few days in the transfer market – but admits he is still a long way from bolstering his struggling Ipswich Town squad.
The Blues boss is desperate to bring in reinforcements after a dreadful start to the new Coca-Cola Championship season, culminating with Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion.
Town have a welcome distraction from league duty tonight when they head to Peterborough United in the second round of the Carling Cup.
And aside from hopefully making progress in that competition, Keane plans to spend the next few days trying to bring much-needed fresh blood to Portman Road.
“I’m hoping it’s going to be a busy few days, but in terms of bringing new players in I wouldn’t say we’re even close yet,” said the Irishman.
“The whole process can take a while but I’m trying to get the wheels in motion.
“In a way, we almost needed to lose three or four games to confirm that we’re short.
“There’s a hell of a long way to go, but I’ve got a good idea of one or two players I’m interested in and they’re good characters.
“It doesn’t help that we are where we are in the table, in terms of attracting players to the club.
“But it’s important to concentrate on where we’re heading rather than where we are right now.
“Ipswich Town is a club that sells itself, in terms of the history and traditions, and I find it easy selling myself and the club.
“If I get to actually meet players I always fancy my chances.”
Keane needs to act fast as the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.
He could still bring in players on loan, but indicated that he would rather bolster his squad with permanent signings who are going to around for the next ‘year or two’.
