Aidy Boothroyd was watching from the stands as Colchester United suffered penalty heartache in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
The U's drew 1-1 with Gillingham in the first round tie at the Priestfield Stadium, after normal time.
Boothroyd, who is expected to be unveiled tomorrow as the new Colchester boss, watched his new club lose 4-3 on penalties.
Scott Vernon, Anthony Wordsworth and Matt Lockwood all netted from the spot.
But David Fox's effort was saved by Gills goalkeeper Alan Julian and David Perkins blasted over, allowing Mark McCammon to send the Gills through.
It looked as though Simeon Jackson's spot-kick would be enough to book Gillingham's progress into the second round, with 14 minutes to go.
But Clive Platt equalised with six minutes left, converting from close range after Vernon's effort had been saved by Julian.
