Perry Groves is surprised at the form slump that could scupper Colchester United’s promotion hopes.

And the former U’s favourite feels the form of some key players has contributed to their run of just one win in 11 games.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side have occupied a top-six place in Coca-Cola League One for the vast majority of the season.

However, they are now seventh and their unwelcome run is threatening to jeopardise their play-off hopes.

Groves, who blossomed at Colchester before securing a high-profile move to Arsenal in 1986, keeps a close eye on his former club’s progress.

And the charismatic media pundit feels the U’s should be higher than they currently are in the league table.

Groves told the Gazette: “I and most of the other Colchester fans thought they would be nailed on for promotion."
