Aidy Boothroyd’s side have occupied a top-six place in Coca-Cola League One for the vast majority of the season.
However, they are now seventh and their unwelcome run is threatening to jeopardise their play-off hopes.
Groves, who blossomed at Colchester before securing a high-profile move to Arsenal in 1986, keeps a close eye on his former club’s progress.
And the charismatic media pundit feels the U’s should be higher than they currently are in the league table.
Groves told the Gazette: “I and most of the other Colchester fans thought they would be nailed on for promotion."
