While England’s footballers were making hard work of their World Cup campaign, West Mersea sailor Saskia Clark was busy winning her own World Cup glory for her country at the Kiel Week Olympic Class regatta.
Clark capped an excellent week’s sailing by claiming her first ISAF Sailing World Cup success since linking up with Olympic gold medallist Sarah Ayton.
The British duo won the women’s 470 class after finishing the medal race with a fourth place to secure the gold medal by four points.
Light winds had interrupted the early part of the regatta, with three races on the opening day followed by just one more fleet race before the final medal race, but Clark and Ayton had dominated the class from the outset.
The win provided the newly-formed dup with a timely boost ahead of the 470 World Championships, which are due to be held in Holland in two weeks.
