Kayode Odejayi's first-half strike gave Colchester United a 1-0 win at struggling Bristol Rovers tonight.

Former Bristol City striker Odejayi pounced to score in the 22nd minute, after Pirates goalkeeper Conrad Logan had struck defender Jerel Ifil and rebounded into his path.

Colchester had plenty of the play throughout, at the Memorial Stadium.

Jean-Paul Kalala cleared off the line and Logan denied the impressive Lloyd James in the first half.

And Rovers rarely posed a threat in the second half, with Odejayi and substitute Steven Gillespie both coming close to doubling Colchester's lead.

Midfielder John-Joe O'Toole made a welcome return for Colchester following a ten-month lay-off with a cruciate ligament injury.

He came on with 12 minutes to go for Kem Izzet, to cap a pleasing night for Colchester.
