Maldon Town boss Stuart Nethercott has admitted the play-offs are likely to be out of reach for his side.

Town sit in 15th place in Ryman League division one north – 13 points from the top six.

But Nethercott told the Standard he won’t be giving up without a fight.

He said: “I think the play-offs are out of reach but we will keep going.

“We are halfway through the season and I will be trying a few things in the second half of the campaign.

“However, we want to finish as high as we can and are capable of upsetting a few teams at the top and we want to beat the best.

“We want to show we can compete.”

Maldon haven’t played since last Tuesday when they lost 1-0 to Brentwood. Their game at East Thurrock United on Saturday was postponed because of the inclement weather, which rendered the pitch unplayable.

Enfield Town are the visitors to Park Drive on Saturday and Nethercott said he has given his players a chance to recharge their batteries.

He said: “We haven’t played since last Tuesday and the players looked tired after the defeat to Brentwood so I halted training and with the game on Saturday called off it meant they have had five or six days rest.

“The little break will do them some good and will have given their legs a break.”

Nethercott has a full squad to choose from, except for the injured Nav Arain.

All eyes will be on the condition of the Park Drive pitch – known to suffer badly in the winter in previous years.

Maldon Reserves had their home game called off on Saturday, giving the pitch a chance to be ready for this weekend.

Supporters are invited to the club’s Christmas Party at Park Drive after the match, where they can meet all staff and players.
