HEYBRIDGE SWIFTS bowed out of the Championship Manager Cup at the quarter-final stage last night, after losing 2-0 at home to Dulwich Hamlet.

The Ryman League division one south side scored two late goals to dump Swifts out of the League Cup competition, at Scraley Road.

Dulwich performed well in the first half but they were either wasteful in front of goal or denied by goalkeeper, Ollie Sanders.

The game continued as an even affair in the second half, although Luke Callander went close for Swifts with 20 minutes to go when he fired over.

Swifts were left furious with nine minutes remaining when their penalty appeals were rejected, after Reece Morgan appeared to be tripped in the area.

And five minutes later, Dulwich Hamlet broke the deadlock through Ray Powell.

Nyren Clunis followed up to score a second for the visitors in stoppage-time after a free-kick had hit a post, to end Swifts’ run in the competition.

MALDON AND TIPTREE’S quarter-final tie at Fleet Town, in the same competition, was postponed.

WITHAM TOWN were beaten 2-1 by Essex Senior League leaders Enfield 1893.

But they were unlucky not to salvage a point from the game, after a strong finish at Spa Road.

Enfield put Witham under pressure for long periods of the first half.

Town goalkeeper Rhys Madden made a couple of good saves and the visitors did not make the breakthrough until three minutes before the break.

Neal Hughes was left unmarked at the far post and beat a defender, before shooting past Madden.

Witham had chances to equalise before the break and James Robinson and Lewis Godbold both missed the target.

However, Lee Sontag doubled Enfield’s lead three minutes after half-time when he found himself in space on the left and fired past Madden.

It left Witham with it all to do but they began to get their act together after that.

They created chances and dominated the final 15 minutes of the contest, unleashing a number of shots.

Rob Whitnell headed in a free-kick with five minutes to go and Town piled on the pressure.

The Enfield goal led a charmed life near the end but Witham were unable to score an equaliser.

Sean Hillier returned to the scoresheet as FC CLACTON won 2-1 at Felixstowe and Walton.

The Seasiders, beaten 1-0 at home to Ely on Saturday, bounced back with a deserved Ridgeons League premier division victory.

Hillier, having recovered from a back injury, made his comeback in last Wednesday’s 1-0 victory at Long Melford, in the East Anglian Cup.

And he followed it up with a goal at the Town Ground, after Jack Cawley opened the scoring with his first Seasiders goal.

Felixstowe pulled one back in injury time.

Clacton boss Steve Pitt said: “We were never under pressure and outplayed them from start to finish.

“It was a decent performance and a very good reaction to the Ely defeat.”
