Firstsite’s Exhibition:
Firstsite is a visual arts organisation in Colchester.
It was opened in 1993 as Colchester and Districts Visual Arts Trust' but in 1995 changed its name to Firstsite which is what we know it as today.
The impressive and unique building designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects is both a gallery and community.
Also known for its range of facilities, such as: cinema screens, visual art, exhibitions, events and more.
It is a proud asset of Colchester.
'Concrete Dreams: Just Can't Get Enough is an exhibition reflecting on the 75th anniversary year of the Government designating Basildon a New Town as well as celebrating the 10th anniversary of Firstsite Collector's group and awards.
This unique exhibition features artists from all across East Anglia.
Basildon unfortunately suffered bombing during WW2 which led to a shortage of housing and the government's solution was to move people into what were and called the new towns.
The exhibition explores the reactions and experiences of people who were affected by this conveyed through art like: photograph, poetry, drawing and more.
I like that this exhibition has a range of different types of art as there is something for everyone to go and look at.
Nicola Burrell:
When visiting this exhibition, I spoke to Samantha Moore who was fascinated by the work of Nicola Burrell.
Based in Colchester, Burrell is interested in assembling and constructing pictures, telling stories and responding to people and places.
From this passion, she went to explore built environments and natural spaces.
Samantha Moore said "I am fascinated to learn that her work is made from hundreds of pieces of materials which in my opinion makes her work breath taking to look at"
Visit the exhibition running up until November 10th to learn more about Nicola Burrell and her work as well as many other inspiring artists.
