Classical music is known for being an elitist genre of music but there are signs that things may slowly be changing. In recent years, Classical music has started to become more diverse, however there is still more work to be done to make it accessible to all.

I spoke to professional horn player Derryck Nasib about his experiences performing pieces by Black Classical composers.

Some of his favourite Black composers are: Florence Price, William Grant Still and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, who have recently had their works performed at major music venues.

Pieces he’s performed are William Grant Still’s Afro American Symphony, Samuel-Coleridge Taylor’s Othello Suite and Florence Price’s 1st Symphony.  Each of these composers had a major impact on the music world in one way or another.

According to Derryck, “Florence Price was one of the most influential composers of her time” and she was the first African-American woman to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra, (Chicago Symphony Orchestra)

William Grant Still was the first African-American to have an opera produced by a major opera company, (New York City Opera)

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor had his piece, Hiawatha performed at the Royal Albert Hall in the early 20th century. He fought against racial prejudice and is often referred to as “a musical genius” by 20th century critics.

Derryck has firm views about the need for diversity in Classical music.

He believes that most Black artists in the music world are centered in mainstream genres like Pop and R&B which is great to see. However, he finds it refreshing that in his career he has the opportunity to play Classical music by Black and other ethnically diverse composers.

He finds it inspiring playing to a diverse audience as it shows how much of a difference playing music by diverse composers has on the audience who attend his performances.

“There is so much diversity in the world and everyone from all backgrounds should have the opportunity to play or listen to Classical music.” He thinks it’s important that music by Black composers is accessible and continues to be performed by orchestras all around the world to ensure their work is never forgotten.

Arts Council England’s recent study showed that there were significant barriers for young people when accessing the Classical music world. Finance and location were often the main barriers that prevented young people entering the industry.

These barriers disproportionately affected individuals from Black, Asian and other ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Derryck noted how important inspiring the next generation of musicians is and ensuring they have the chance to play music by Black composers. “There is so much room for Black composers in the music world.”

Hopefully, with time, we will see new diverse composers emerge in the Classical music world. To achieve this, we must support diversity within the industry and continue to promote the accessibility of music written by Black composers.
