For the last couple of years people have slowly begun to notice that the difference between young boys and girls clothing is inappropriate.
Some people taking it to social media or calling out brands.
So why has nothing been done about this?
Many big brands are aware of this problem and yet they still continue to produce this type of clothing.
The outrage comes from the girls’ clothing either being sexualised or including sexist messages, an incident of this that caused a controversy was a top that says “Perfect snack" on the front and a picture of a fruit cut in half and the text “Take a bite” on the back of the top.
This is extremely inappropriate for a piece of clothing for a little girl and lots of parents were unhappy with the message.
An example of young girl’s clothes being different is shorts sizes.
A boy and girl of the same age will have drastically different choices.
Girl’s shorts will typically be shorter and tighter whereas boys are longer and less tight allowing the boys to roam free and the girls to be more restricted.
Also with tops, girl’s tops are usually tighter than boys which again, restricts their movement.
However, the sexist messages within children’s clothes can go across both boys and girls with boys clothes having footballs, dinosaurs and darker colours usually blues and greens, whereas girls are usually pinks and purples and frilly skirts with dancers and makeup being featured on the clothing.
We should not be putting children in these type of clothes as they project sexist ideals and keep society from progressing to a point of equality.
We also shouldn't be putting girls in these types of clothing as we are restricting them from being a kid.
They aren't able to run around as easy as boys, they can’t play in the park and swing around if they are wearing a little skirt, they are more likely to hurt themselves as they have less protection, and they are most likely going to be a lot colder.
Do we really want girls to grow up like this?
To not have experienced their childhood to the full extent?
Now some people may read this article and think “Sexualising children? No way would companies do that!” and to the people that think that I understand why you may believe that, but I suggest you go to pretty much any shop and look at the clothes
The shorts especially, compare a girl’s pair of shorts to a boy’s pair.
